Family Fitness Challenge

Picture
The Family Fitness Challenge is a family-based adapted activity and fitness intervention is aimed at promoting motor competence and physical activity levels in those with and without developmental disabilities. Our inclusive program allows families with children/teens ages 10 - 17 years of all ability levels to participate.

Given the high demand of this program, families will complete an application (see below) and may be randomly assigned to participate in one of two activity programs: group exercise or group yoga. The purpose of this random assignment is to allow us to carefully test the differences between these two exercise programs to determine the impact on health, fitness, and parental stress.

The program consists of 10 weeks of classes held once a week on Tuesday OR Thursday night from 6-7pm from September 12/14 to November 28/30, 2017.  Each family will be assigned an activity coach to help assist the children/teens through the activities during the sessions. Activity coaches will also work one-on-one with families to create for healthy eating and exercise plans for the week.

We will conduct pre/post-test assessments to examine body composition (fat/muscle/bone) and fitness levels for all participants (yup, parents, this means you too!). Parents will also complete questionnaires regarding eating, sleep, and parental stress/mental health. Families will be given wrist-worn physical activity monitors to help keep track of physical activity during the week. The results of the program will be provided with recommendations from the health coaches at the end of the program.

The program will cost $150/family (for up to 4 family members). Upon successful completion of the pre/post-tests and participation in the 10-week program, families will receive a $50. Scholarships for the program are available to families that qualify for free or reduced school lunches. Our scholarships are made possible, in part, by a generous gift from East Alabama Medical Center Foundation.
